Issue #42 - Dragons

At the SIhn underground palace, early in the morning Sihn Mi again visits Laughton and wants to show him that her offer of power is a serious one.  She claims to be able to show him something he'd want to know, and escorts him to a long hallway with many doors.  She chooses a door and shows him through it - into a room decorated in Florentine styling and with many Catholic ornaments.  He quickly surmises that the room has all the appearance of being in the Palace of the Holy Office in Vatican City.  Mi leaves the room, closing the door behind her.  Shortly Laughton hears two people about to enter the room; he turns to his monopole form and listens as two Cardinals enter, speaking in Latin.  One is Cardinal Rossi, already known to Laughton from his investigations (see Desperate End Run - The Sacrosanct Investigation, Volume I).  He says, "Someone is close."

The other is Cardinal De Luca, who responds, "I know, but is the front not holding?"

Rossi replies, "It is very hard to say. I feel a dangerous wind. I can't hold an entire house up."

De Luca instructs, "Faith can. Get with others and find a solution. Rebuild the fourth wall."

They then depart.

Laughton muses in the darkness.  He checks the door he came in, and, as he expects, it only leads into a closet now.  He's stranded, but with food for thought.  Meanwhile, back in China, Spectrum has disturbing dreams of Laughton as the Pope...

So Laughton does not show for breakfast, but his sudden disappearances are something the Justice Squad is used to.  As they dine some two stories above where their guest rooms are, Sammy and Spectrum discuss the fight Sammy had with SIhn Loo.  Eliot rationalizes a bit for his family, offering up that perhaps they have different rules than Sammy and others from America are used to.  Without speaking, Spectrum pushes her mind link a little to discuss the situation with the old mage kept in one of the lowest levels and his SOS to her.  Eliot is disappointed in the creepy tone of his birth family, and having survived and learnt from the Necronomicon he's unwilling to be swayed in their direction, regardless of the considerable knowledge locked in their arcane libraries and the resources certainly at their avail.

Sihn Zsi joins them and asks Sammy about the "match" he heard about between Sammy and Loo.  Sammy just responds that it "didn't last long."  The conversation though quickly turns to the captive figure as Sihn Zsi asks Spectrum if the visit was to her satisfaction.  While it was materially, she asks about the mage and Zsi is non-committal, simply saying he's an old associate.  Eliot asks how he came to be an associate, and Zsi explains that a very long time ago the family had heard of this mage in the West, visited him, and he had eagerly joined them for the studies and benefits they offered.  Eliot asks delicately, working generally well within the bounds of etiquette though it's unusually indirect for him, if the man is happy.  Zsi does not seem to know, mentioning he hasn't spoken to him for a century; Eliot offers up perhaps the mage could vacation to Detroit, and asks if he's ever taken a vacation.  The family patriarch stresses that the family has many enemies who would love to get to the mage.  Eliot presses the point, impressing the old man with his candor, as he talks about staff management and suggests perhaps Zsi could get more out of his people if he studied modern management techniques.  But stepping back from his presumptive line of thought, Eliot more succinctly and directly says that if the man wants to go free, he should be set free.  Zsi counters, "Would you turn your child loose on the streets?"  Eliot muses privately that perhaps it's the world that should be concerned about his offspring, not vice-versa, then aloud says, "You might want to rephrase that."  Zsi smiles but lets the point stand.  Zsi then asks, "Do you feel he wishes his freedom?"  Eliot simply suggests that anyone might want to come and go freely now and then, and offers that as Zsi has not checked in with him for 100 years, it's certainly possible.

Zsi is intrigued and entertains the notion seriously.  He is concerned that the man might turn traitor, if he even wishes to be free.  He goes on to point out that this man knows many family secrets and letting him go free could pose great danger.  Eliot is sympathetic, pointing out he's seen similar situations, thinking of their recent break-up with Jonas Hell.  As capabilities are discussed, Eliot and Suzanne volunteer that Suzanne could probe the man's mind very deeply and unearth whether he has any serious resentments or ill intentions.  With Eliot's help and the resources at Zsi's avail, certainly what she sees could be broadcast and verified.  Zsi consents to the arrangement, and all prepare.  Suzanne studies some spells and concentrates, while Eliot also does some studying, both magically and about the Sihn family.  They agree to perform a ritual mind-reading before lunch, which Zsi arranges to be by a lake that appears to be outdoors in daylight, even though well below ground.  Hearing about lunch, Sammy asks what will be served, though Zsi does not know yet.  Then Sammy asks if he can cook, but is refused.

With Suzanne and Eliot intently at work, Sammy grows bored and begins to wander the palace.  He turns all his senses to their max, hearing and seeing minute details as he walks.  He, appearing as his nondescript "regular" human-looking self but with Chinese features,  soon starts following a butler.  The butler betrays just a bit of anxiety as he looks to see Sammy following him, but quickly acclimates and acts as if nothing is abnormal.  The butler is walking with a box on a pillow, carrying it to someone.   As the butler goes down in the elevator, followed by Sammy, and continue down a hallway, he finally turns to Sammy and says something in Chinese.  Sammy simply mimics it, louder.  They both look puzzled.  Finally, the butler points down the hall, wanting Sammy to go away.  Sammy, not understanding and simply eager to be friends, points down the hall, too.  The butler looks down the hall, then suddenly grabs the door nearby and squeezes in, using his body to block Sammy's view or entrance and rapidly shutting the door.  Undeterred, Sammy knocks on the door.  A gruff voice with a sort of cowboy/Southern accent hollers, "What do you want??" in English.  Sammy hollers back, "Who are you?"  The man then says, "Who are YOU?"  They go back and forth and the man finally bellows, "Get yore ass in here!"

Sammy enters to see a figure in a dust-faded Confederate outfit, one bug-eye, and a mean stretch of skin joining the upper and lower lips on the side - Jonas Hex.  Hex is reclining with an obvious leg wound.  Sammy swiftly says, "I'm a doctor."  He sets to work as Hex says, "Do whut ya gotta do, doc."  Sammy, moving to a side room to morph into a full doctor ensemble, begins taking off bandages...and inadvertently messes just where he should not, causing Hex great pain - in fact it reopens his wound!  So great pain, in fact, that Hex draws his gun and aims it at Sammy's head, both eyes now wide and staring at Sammy.  He demand, "Who are you?" as Sammy moves his head all the way around trying to avoid Hex' gun.  Hex says, "So you ain't human!"  Sammy insists, ""I wouldn't be trying to help you if I were human, I'd just be a regular person then.  Here, let me help you..." but Hex is ready to shoot and Sammy backs off.  Hex tells him to get out, and Sammy retorts he shouldn't hurt a doctor.  Jonah says, "You ain't no doctor," and Sammy says, before leaving, "You're not a nice person!"

Sammy then continues down the hall, going to the next door.  He hears a man and woman talking, so he knocks.  The man answers and says, "Ah, Sammy."  It is Chian Fo, head of household services.  Sammy offers to help when he hears this, but the man doesn't want him to.  Given Sammy's eagerness, Chian settles by asking Sammy to stay in his room and "help".  The woman inside bows nervously, not appearing to understand Sammy as he says "hello," aside from a most rudimentary notion.  Sammy bows back.  The woman, Chian's wife, goes in the other room to get some tea.  Sammy surprises them by going to help her, making them both very stressed.  Sammy chatters away about tea.  They sit patiently and the man talks to Sammy, being patient with the important guest.  After tea is finished, Sammy gets up and gives them both a big hug.  He insists they come visit him in Detroit before he leaves.

Meanwhile as Eliot studies and Suzanne concentrates, Sihn Loo happens upon them.  He does not interrupt Suzanne, but does barge in on Eliot.  He asks if Eliot enjoys contests or sports or "action".  Eliot says he's outgrown that, causing Loo to raise an eyebrow and ask what he means.  Eliot says there are more interesting things, and that in his line of work action is necessary but it's preferable to avoid if possible.  As Loo is scandalized and says Eliot has no "balance", Eliot responds that "balance is merely an illusion."  Loo then tries to irk Eliot, saying how he understands that Eliot is getting older and weaker, and must watch for his bones and muscles.  Eliot points out he does care for his well-being and doesn't have a compunction to seek extra physical danger, adding "a week without someone trying to kill me is good; two weeks with just a couple fights and I'm doing pretty good; so you see, the act of trying to live gives me plenty of exercise."  Then Eliot zings Loo back, saying "some people live in cloistered surroundings, fortunately I've not been granted that luxury."  Suzanne opens one eye briefly, but gets back to concentrating.  Nexus/Eliot goes on to point out to Loo he's been splashed (from Aela), splattered, had his eyes pulled out, arms taken off, been burnt, broken, beaten, crushed, smashed, and shot.  "Really, I find it holds no thrill for me anymore.  No matter how tough you are, someone can clean the floor with you."  Sihn Loo defensively and irately declares that he has not lived a cloistered life and has himself been in many combats.

Just then Sammy enters, and Loo says, "I must take my leave."  Sammy, affable until the bitter end, enthusiastically yells, "Uncle Loo!"  They briefly talk and Loo says he looks forward to seeing Sammy at lunch.  Sammy says a couple words in Mandarin as Eliot has helped him pick up a little.  Coincidentally, Suzanne has also been learning a little of the language.

As Suzanne practices concentrating, she hears a sort of distant, little voice in her head.  She focuses and finds that Laughton is concentrating intensely on her, and her familiarity and concentration is allowing her to at least poke a little through the defenses of the palace to reach his open (to her) and seeking mind.  He explains he's stuck in Rome, and adds, "I'm in cardinal robes."  Spectrum discusses this with Sihn, as to how to best teleport him from where he is to here, and Sihn offers up, "I think they have dogs here..." referring to teleporting just Laughton's brain into a dog.  Laughton indicates he's in no danger and uninterested in residing in a dog.  Being busy, she lets him know she'll get back to him.

And then they go to help the strange mage in the basement floor.  The man is asleep, readied for her.  Sammy smells a rat and a man in the room.  Suzanne has a special defense prepared in case of treachery and boosts her telepathy to reach deep inside the man's mind.  She triggers deep and ancient memories, finding the man to be hundreds of years old.  His name is "Marlen", and she sees a Dark Ages English castle and a ritual and a battle in his mind.  She sees him remembering when the Chinese, strange foreign people mostly unknown to Europeans, came to visit him and tempted him with great knowledge and power.  She sees him leave a noble Englishman to go with them, voluntarily.  As she concentrates on his needs and desires, she finds he does desperately want freedom.  He harbors some resentment towards the Sihns, but it is light, and mainly he regrets just having spent so much time away from home and the world at large, having more anger with himself than anyone or anything else.  He is eager to explore and doesn't seem threatening.  He has an idea of modern London in his head, though it's formed from texts and pictures from the last few decades and is a bit jumbled.  Over his mental picture of London words scroll, as if they were text on movie film.  Suzanne relates what she sees honestly.  Sihn Loo is there and listens intently but seems skeptical, whereas Sihn Zsi is open and interested, though he reveals no emotion.

It's time for lunch at the lake.  Several dozen pheasant are brought specifically for Sammy.  A large pig is roasted for all, as well as one specifically for Sammy.  Among the crowd of a couple dozen attendees are a couple Westerners and an African.  Sammy introduces himself to everyone and practices his rudimentary Mandarin.  A couple people ask him if Nexus (still relatively new to the public) is Nexus or Rodin (or Rodent); Sammy feigns that he isn't sure.   As Sihn Mi asks if there's anything they'd like to do, Sammy asks where they make fortune cookies.  Eliot says they probably have to go to Hong Kong to get the Westernized kind Sammy is accustomed to.  Spectrum points out there's a fortune cookie factory right up the road from Sihn-tek and Laughton Agency.

Just then there is a gentle round of bell sounds as utensils strike fine china, and Zsi makes an announcement.  He formally welcomes Eliot and his entourage.  He points out that Eliot has presented the family with an opportunity, one they had missed without him, and Marlen is produced as he is granted his freedom!  Sammy gives Eliot a hug.  Spectrum eagerly talks with Marlen (who confirms he is indeed the basis of Merlin from the Arthurian tales and that he served with Arthur, whose name was actually Riothamus (GM note - for a speculative but serious historical summary, see http://www.britannia.com/history/docs/sidonius.html)).   Marlen asks Spectrum about super-people; she relates it's a "different" life but has a positive effect and is a good thing.  He asks, "People respect you and you have followers?"  Sammy chimes in they do.  Marlen wonders at Nexus' flowing cape with its shifting dimensional views.  He's eager to see the world - and more.

Talk turns to departing as the Justice Squad prepares to take its leaves - they've had enough of this place and prefer to leave on a high note with Marlen's freedom (and they've committed to see him to Detroit safely).  Eliot points out, in apologetic tones, to his father that they must leave, as he refers to "how many people out there want to kill us, we have to get back to that."  Zsi insists on a formal banquet in their honor and it is arranged.

Spectrum contacts Laughton again and he indicates he's busy on another line of investigation anyway as she relates events there and that they're leaving soon, all feel there's no reason to get together in China.

Throughout the afternoon Sammy stays busy meeting people.  He runs into one of the Westerners, a German named Helmut Beuche, who teaches Sammy chess.  Spectrum, having a drink nearby in the lounge they're in, watches out for Sammy and scans Helmut's mind, finding him surprisingly resistant.  She digs just a bit and finds that he's associated with Kietersling but seems to have no designs on Sammy aside from enjoying his company.  Eliot gives Sammy a few chess pointers, while Spectrum communicates to both Beuche's relationship.  As the two play, Helmut explains a bit of the "dark arts" to Sammy, indicating that's his trade, but mostly spends time talking about his childhood in Bavaria.

As Sammy begins to play in earnest, Suzanne spends her time talking with Marlen, inevitably returning to the subject of the Arthurian legends.  Marlen mentions that the Morgan stories aren't exactly true but they did have a "bad relationship".  After a while she gives him a break and wanders around herself, looking for anything unusual or any known missing mystic artifacts out of sheer curiosity.  She does come across a chalice that always refills itself, one she recognizes from one of Giles' books.  She also comes across a first edition Voltaire and similarly rare Western texts, eventually settling down to read.

Eliot moves on to continue in the family library.  He reads up on many Sihns past and their too-often frequent demises from shadowy events obviously only half-whispered by the books.

After the chess match, which Helmut wins (they actually play a couple games, Sammy doing better in the second one), Sammy moves along and runs across Loo.  The idea of another "swordfight" comes up, and Sammy asks for the rules to be explained more clearly.  Loo only says, "Start with swords, be resourceful, and be honorable."  Sammy highly doubts that Loo means what most people do by honorable.  Battle is soon joined.  Sammy stays away from Loo more carefully, dodging him so well that Loo admits, "Ah, you are good!"  Sammy then manages to stab Loo with the sword.  Loo pulls an interesting trick, leaving the sword stuck in himself and grabbing it to pull Sammy closer, then striking Sammy.  Loo deals Sammy three rapid blows, hurting him and even stunning him at one point.  But Sammy is better-prepared and morphs his body to keep up with the damage.  Then Loo blinds Sammy with his spit.  What Loo does not realize is that Sammy has the fabled sonar of a bat, and can see still.  Sammy surprises Loo, grabbing the sword out of Loo.  Loo sputters angrily in Chinese and tosses his sword at Sammy, who avoids it.  Then Sammy strikes Loo, knocking him down.  Suddenly, as he gets ready to strike again,  Sammy trips and falls backwards (GM note - 18 rolled).  Both get up at the same time.  Loo looks weak and angry as Sammy moves across the room from Loo and releases an acidic spray at him (simply returning the spitting gesture, in Sammy's mind).  The acid knocks out Loo.  Sammy, ever decent, tends to Sihn Loo's wounds, using his gel-like shedding to now cure them.   But Loo is a sore loser; as he comes to, he grabs Sammy's throat and tries to choke him.  Sammy quickly drops Loo and carries him out.  He finds a servant to take Loo to his room, Sammy explaining that Loo "got tired during the match."  Of course Loo still has cuts and bruises all over his body.  And famished, Sammy wanders into the first open room he can find with food and helps himself.

It's finally time for the big feast.  Sihn Zsi announces that Sihn Loo cannot come as he is "ill".  Spectrum (told by Sammy what happened) catches a few servants very slightly smiling as the real reason has spread.  Eliot gets a bit concerned, though, and asks Sammy a few questions to assure Loo didn't get killed somehow (no doubt Eliot even more sensitized from the many accounts of his family dying).  He finds out that Loo tried to kill Sammy and at first gets a bit angry, until Sammy explains that perhaps Loo wasn't trying to kill him, but he was certainly playing very rough.  Eliot then gives a half-hearted lecture to Sammy about not being too rough himself on a host.  Sammy explains they're lucky as they both fell down at the end and Sammy just squeezed out a victory.  Sammy wonders aloud, "I hope he's not feeling sore about it."  Away in his room, Sihn Loo is indeed sore, in fact he's possessed with a seething rage.  Sammy wonders how Loo is, and Mi, overhearing, says she'll be sure to check into Loo's condition.  She's smiling quite widely.  Sammy, still friendly (after all, it's his "dad's" family), points out Loo seemed "kind of mad" and says he'd really like to help him.  Mi is even more bemused as Sammy wonders how he should patch things up.  Eliot mentions to Sammy that probably Fox Force Five would be a good intermediary.  Mi offers to help, but Eliot insists on letting things be.

Mi also expresses a desire to visit Detroit.  As Mi and Sammy talk, he points out he can show her places that no one else ever visits.  She's excited, not realizing he means the many dumpsters and back alleys he frequents in search of interesting foods.  Suzanne, knowing the score, advises Mi that what most aren't interested in is a dumpster tour that Sammy provides.  She then recalls when, not thinking, she asked her boyfriend Nightshade to take Sammy on patrol...Nightshade wasn't so amused at first.

The feast winds on without event, and soon the Justice Squad bids farewell.  Eliot is disappointed, having now not only lost his mother but realized there's no ancestral home worth celebrating.  But they're all glad to have helped Marlen who accompanies them back.  Marlen ends up staying with Willow.

Back in Detroit, conversation returns to Magneto.  Sihn has some dialogue with Suzanne about wanting to move against Magneto and shares his concern about Laughton's relationship with Magneto.  And just a couple hours later, as Sammy and Spectrum are hanging out at Laughton Agency and Eliot is toiling away at Sihn-tek, Velda, doing double duty covering Sihn-tek's phones, calls...Magneto is visiting!  And he wants to talk specifically with Sihn.  Eliot goes to the downstairs conference room, while Spectrum, also notified, mentally knocks on Eliot's brain and offers her help if he needs it.  Sammy turns into a fly and gets away from Suzanne as she tries to tell him not to bother Eliot, so she warns Eliot about that as well.  Spectrum then contacts Sammy telepathically and insists he comes back.  He resists, but she points out he can see Magneto after he talks to Eliot, and they have things to talk about.  Sammy says, "But what if they need me?  And I need to be there in case somebody says something juicy!"

Magneto is brief with Eliot.  He points out that while he had warned them before he would no longer restrain himself, he gave time and space.  But he tells Nexus that if Nexus refuses to get out of his way, he'll kill him.  Nexus replies he won't get out of his way, that his course of action is wrong.  Magneto nods grimly and leaves.  Nexus moves on to a different dimension, making a simulacrum of himself to activate as necessary.  He decides to make arrangements to ensure his family's safety as well.

As Magneto leaves, Suzanne (mentally having been in contact with Eliot) is sure to tell Sammy.  Sammy greets Magneto enthusiastically, but Magneto is in a hurry and not in a good mood.  Sammy gives Magneto a big goodbye hug, and Magneto, dour, says "To more pleasant times," as he leaves.

A week later a new attack is launched on Laughton Agency!  A loud sort of thud is heard out front, and suddenly the sound of steel and glass smashing is heard reverberating through Laughton Agency and at nearby Sihn-tek.  A massive metal dragon-like creature is attacking the Laughton Agency, smashing through the vestibule and taking out the (heavily reinforced) front doors!  This huge dragon-like thing is four stories tall, as tall as Laughton Agency itself.  Nexus, Sammy, and Spectrum are nearby and leap into action.  Spectrum scans to see it has no brain activity.  Nexus detects no magical force.  They note it is covered with a strange watery gel.  Nexus asks the creature "What's this about," but gets no response.  The dragon shoots an intense heat and the top story of Laughton Agency is set ablaze!

Nexus, working from the side alley, strikes the thing with a mystical force, borrowing energy from another dimension intended to slow down the creature; it begins to work, but not before the thing smashes into the second floor, weakening the building structure.  Spectrum, out on the street, telekinetically picks up debris and hurls it at the dragon to no avail.  She then grabs something more pointed but it also just makes a clanging sound as it bounces off the extremely tough metal.  Sammy sneaks near the front of the building and then runs out to rescue a few nearby people too slow or amazed to move in time.

Nexus then aims his energy at the thing and slows it further, so that it is nearly brought to a halt, barely moving.  Suzanne creates a force wall from mental energy and scoops up some of the Laughton Agency people, including Velda, and brings them to safety.  Nexus, taking extra time and aim, strikes the thing with a massive blast of energy as he makes dimensions collide, but nothing penetrates it.  Sammy shoots an intensely concentrated spray that burns a very slight hole in it, but one just big enough for him to slither into the thing.  Nexus takes a rest for a moment as Spectrum keeps them mind-linked with Sammy as he explores.  Sammy sees a conduit of cable and moves through the innards of the thing, looking for gears or the like.  He finds some dense, heavy gear-like objects and strikes at them, starting to chip at them.  Nexus makes another mighty blow, denting it a bit.  Spectrum grabs a parking meter with her mind and sends it slamming into the beast-thing, change flying everywhere as it lodges in the backside of it but does no real damage.

They study it and note the mouth of the thing has a cannon-like projectile that shot the heat ray causing the fire on Laughton Agency.  Spectrum grabs a manhole covers, again telekinetically, and projects it into the cavern, but misses a bit, hitting in the mouth but not quite closing the hole, still causing damage.  Nexus takes time to study it further, but finds nothing immediately useful.

The dragon makes one more strike, its tail flailing unexpectedly and striking Spectrum, stunning her.  Nexus moves to assist her as the dragon thing can only move slowly now.  Spectrum comes to while Sammy is continuing to chip at the gear until it suddenly crumbles, and the nearby leg becomes immobile.  Sammy finally leaves the thing and using his knowledge Nexus teleports into it.  It is quickly disabled as they continue to focus on its weak points, the gears and head area.  But as Nexus works on the internal head area, he finds a couple boxes.  One appears to be a bomb of sorts, which he disables, but another, smaller box explodes and some sort of devices are entirely destroyed.

They move it to a park and study the metal it was composed of, as well as the rockets embedded in its feet which enabled its travel.  They also check the fuel.  From their findings, they determine the metal is an alloy provided by Schlumberger, the French equivalent of Haliburton.  They find the dragon is 4 tons, and what is most odd, but provoking, is that there is no trace of DNA or human involvement in it.  They begin to suspect the robotic stalker of mutants who killed the Jerky Boys and the Amazing Mazer.  The thing only carried enough fuel to get it to Laughton Agency; from examining the type of fuel and dynamics of the dragon, they surmise it traveled between 3,000 and 8,000 miles, coming from the direction of Europe or North Africa.

Suzanne also takes time to use her legal skills and work with some of the disturbed folk, assuring waivers are signed and no charges are pressed.  T-shirts are made saying "I got slightly injured and signed a waiver and all I got was this lousy t-shirt," a trademark of the Justice Squad.

Laughton Agency meanwhile has sustained millions in damages.

Contacts are made with other nations via Terwilliger.  Canada, the US, and the UK acknowledge seeing a rapid moving object.  French authorities report no such thing.  They contact Laughton and begin to investigate more deeply...
