Issue #27 - Steel Assistance

It's a lazy mid-day break among the Justice Squad.  Spectrum sits drinking with Jonas the Wonder Dog, pouring whiskey into his bowl as she drinks her own.  Sammy, back from his tour openly impersonating Elvis,  is trying to help Jonas Hell get in touch with his new dog self, by impersonating a border collie and showing Jonas the things he learned.  A news flash attracts the attention of the team...

...it seems downtown as young Danelle Steel is on break and doing some shopping in the Renaissance area, she's experiencing spontaneous mutation.  Her body starts shooting fragments of steel and she herself transforms into a thick body of steel, digging deep into the sidewalk as her weight expands from barely 120 pounds to 4 tons and her height from a little over 5 feet to 7 feet.  As the crowd disperses the police spring into action.  Within moments cautious policeman surround her, and in a few minutes Lieutenant Detective Berger arrives.  He begins speaking with her, as she manages to get herself out of the hole she's made in the ground.  She stares a bit too long in his eyes, a habit of hers, though he tends to ignore it.  She realizes as she moves about she can spread her feet to keep the weight better distributed, her feet becoming like snowshoes.  Berger badgers her a bit, expressing to others his anxiousness to handle her case locally before the state police arrive, and asks her to get into the paddy wagon.  She thinks to herself that might be a problem, then voices a hesitation.  He tells her to go on, but sure enough her awkwardness and weight break the bottom of the van.  She offers to walk downtown with him.  Uncertainly he begins to do so, a police car slowly accompanying them.

The Justice Squad takes off quickly.  Spectrum slips a bit drunkenly as she tries to rise.  She and the Wonder Dog stagger off into the Black Buick, joining the rest of the Justice Squad.  The Black Buick quickly arrives on the scene, to see Berger and Danelle walking down the street.  They get out of the car and approach, except Spectrum who leans on the front of the car.  Danelle stares at Neumann a bit, his red eye glows brighter in return.  As she sees the clattering on-the-cheap robot she says aloud, "I thought I looked like a wreck."  Neumann apparently takes no notice, as he has no emotional responses.

As the Justice Squad gets closer and Neumann's telescopic eye reaches out for a good close look, Berger grumbles, "All right, I've seen the memo, I know I'm supposed to be nice to the Justice Squad now.  So what are you freaks doing here?"  Jonas-dog pees on Berger's leg even before Laughton gives the command, while Sammy leaps up and licks Berger's face.   Berger hollers at them to keep their dogs away.  Jonas wavers and belches at Berger before begrudgingly heeling at Laughton's command (enticed by the knowledge of good scotch to come).  Neumann reaches his flapping tentacle-like wiry "hand" to shake Danelle's and she moves her steely hand out in a similarly stretching motion, but not knowing herself well bangs into Neumann's hand and cosmetically damages it.  Neumann retreats his hand sheepishly, though she quickly assures him it was a mistake.

Introductions are hastily made, and, after hesitating, Danelle introduces herself as "Steely Danelle."  As Neumann hears "Dan-L" in pronunciation, he quickly asks, "What happened to Dan-K?"  Laughton chimes in, "No, you mean Dan-XXXXVIIII," preferring the earlier Roman styling.  Sammy sniffs at Steely.  Laughton hands over his local number that only requires payment after 20 minutes instead of his 900 number.  Spectrum gives her the Palmer card and number and stresses that it is entirely free to call, explaining the difference.  Sihn mentions he can examine her and would like to get a sample.  As she asks why, he just replies, "Just curious."

The discussion moves to Steely Danelle's disposition and it's wondered if the Black Buick can hold her.  Gere-luce makes a trip down and helps in the analysis, and seeing how Danelle can shape her hands a bit, suggests very nervously, as she's a lady, that if she can shape her derriere in the right shape it might distribute her weight well enough to sit in the Buick.  Berger, knowing his charge to cooperate and utilize the Justice Squad as a resource rather treat them as an enemy, is willing to go over to Sihntek to interrogate her and if satisfied leave her, given that the Black Buick can transport her.  As she sits on the pavement to test turning her bottom into a long flat shape she suddenly slips partially into a mercurial form, finding out she can do so entirely if she tries.  After a bit she masters what she needs and awkward arrangements in the vehicle are made.

On the way Sihn chats up Berger, causing him no end of annoyance as Berger grits his teeth.  The conversation turns to Jonas Hell as Sihn complains how imprisonment turned him mad, making him think he's a dog.  Berger swears he sees a grin on Sihn's face and immediately puts two and two together.

At Sihntek, SIhn gets a sample to analyze while Berger interrogates Steely Danelle for a while, trying to see if she's telling the truth about her own amazement at the incident as opposed to lying and having planned something more sinister.  As he becomes satisfied with her story he tells her there's some paperwork she'll have to do and makes arrangements for later.  He tells her she shouldn't mess with the "freaks" of the Justice Squad, and she asks what he means by that term.  He rails on about them being mutant freaks and without hesitation brands her the same.  She presses him as to why he calls her that and he exclaims on her appearance.  She rises to her feet threateningly, and says, "Yeah, look at me, I look pretty impressive, don't I?  Pretty powerful!"  She seems taken with her new form, wanting its abilities, and adapting immediately.  She shoots metal out of her fingertips into the wall to demonstrate her power to the irritating Berger, and the loud smacking sounds bring Sihn immediately into the room.  He helps calm her down and Berger backs down a bit.

As Berger leaves, SIhn tells him, "I'll give you a C- on the friendliness attempt, keep up the good work and you'll do better."  Berger storms out.

Steely Danelle asks Spectrum, getting over her bender, if she has any sort of polish that works on metal.  Danelle feels an immediate need to keep herself shiny as her shell is scuffed and smeared from being touched and shuttled around.  Spectrum finds some cleaner and as Steely polishes Sihn approaches her and takes her aside to discuss her powers as he's analyzed them.  Steely Danelle asks Sihn what the Justice Squad does with their powers and Sihn confirms what she's heard in the papers, that they protect the city.  Sammy joins in and talks about heroism.  Steely asks what it pays, and Sammy responds they get free meals and all sorts of money and it's a good deal.  Sihn asks Danelle what she does, and she indicates she's a receptionist and should get back to work as it's well into the afternoon.  She notices on the way out that Sihntek has an opening for a receptionist.

But upon arriving at work naturally the office panics at the sight of this strange being that does not resemble the Danelle they knew.  She calls out and convinces them of who she is - they all heard the news.  Her boss steps out from under a desk and hesitantly attempts to smooth things over and says, "Mmmmm, well, y'see, the thing is we're phasing out the receptionist position here.  We were going to tell you when you got back, okay?  Sorry, but you can see Human Resources.  I have a meeting, " as he looks at his watch with urgency.

But Steely Danelle is shocked and hollers out, "Are you firing me?"  As the boss first tries to not quite say it but is forced to for clarity, she lashes out, her fist forming a hammer and breaking her former desk.  She looks for Kleenex, but not for tears, rather to start cleaning the smudges she's gained from the walk over and into the place.  She thinks to herself, "What a weasel!"  Upset she gathers up a few of her belongings and rushes out.  Her finger forms into a sharp edge and as she walks out she "keys" his car.

Her thoughts turn to food, both from hunger and agitation, and she goes to a recently-opened "all you can eat" buffet, set up by an ignorant out-of-towner.  She runs into Sammy there and he enthusiastically greets her.  She realizes nothing appeals to her, and not just from the sight of Sammy's gluttony.  She taps a fork absent-mindedly against her chin and then chews on it like one might the edge of a pen.  Her steel teeth cut into it and she starts to chew the piece of stainless steel metal.  Then she swallows, thinking how good it tastes, and knows what she wants to eat.  Sammy thoughtfully gathers up utensils from around the restaurant.  The manager watches in shock, afraid and unable to move, as Sammy finishes all the food and Steely Dan finishes all the utensils, both oblivious to his reaction.  As they talk, Danelle mentions she's missing out on her soaps, and Sammy volunteers the use of his large screen television.  He's watched many soaps and is glad to watch them with her.  He also reminds her that Sihn has an opening.  They rush over to the mostly-secret underground location under Laughton Agency, though she pauses at a junkyard to chow down on an engine block.

When they arrive Laughton is gone, having flown off on some case unknown to them.   Sammy brings Danelle down the elevator and alarms go off as Sammy is not authorized to bring a stranger in, but since he's in there the ejection device remains at bay.  Downstairs Neumann happens to be in front of the elevator and in sympathy his own alarm goes off, a flashing light raising out of his head and a loud siren set off from him.  He calls out, "ALARM, ALARM!"  Spectrum is in Sammy's entertainment center room, sleeping it off, and groans and pulls a pillow over her head.  Jonas the Wonder Dog also tries to go back to sleep.  Sihn is in his lab next to the elevator door and rushes out.  Neumann stands down when he sees Sammy unassumingly entering with Steely.  Sihn walks out and sees Steely in their base and says, "No," to Sammy, sending the elevator back up just as Sammy says, "She's an employee..."

Undeterred, Sammy offers up a trip to O'Malley's to Danelle.  She agrees and Neumann also goes upstairs and tags along.  As Sammy and Steely discuss her new eating habits, Neumann gets alarmed.  Upon arriving at O'Malley's a few regulars crowd around the bar watching a cricket match.  O'Malley greets them warmly.  Sammy orders scotch, vodka, and beer.  O'Malley volunteers up to Neumann that he has a nice stock of top quality oil and goes to get it for an appreciative Neumann.  Steely looks at the brass railing like a bowl of popcorn.  Then she looks at Neumann in a different way, reassuring him he looks nothing like food to her.  Neumann is relieved.  As O'Malley returns with Neumann's oil, he asks if the drinks are on Laughton's tab.  From an intercom covertly installed by Laughton a voice hollers, out, "NO!"  O'Malley looks around confused and says, "I gotta fix that thing."  Sammy readily agrees the drinks are on Laughton Agency.  Neumann concurs, "That seems most logical."  Neumann then collects a glass of forks for Steely Danelle but she realizes they are a cheap alloy and isn't interested, continuing to eye the brass railing.  O'Malley, now accustomed to the Justice Squad, readily says he can get Steely something she'll like and rushes off.  Neumann uses his strange controls to remotely change the channel on the television in support of Steely Danelle's desire to watch the soaps.  The regulars turn angrily at first, exclaiming "HEY!" and then their senses come to them, and they shuffle off.  The trio of supers are largely oblivious.  After a bit Steely sees the dart board and anxious to test her powers more begins throwing out her own self-manufactured steel darts at them.  Meanwhile Sammy explains soap operas to Neumann as Neumann wonders why characters are upset so often.  In a bedroom scene Neumann turns his head at Sammy expectantly for some sort of clue as to what is happening.  Sammy's explanation is technically correct, but somehow insufficient.

Eight hundred miles away Laughton has arrived and is busily setting up monitoring around Kingpin's ranch in Oklahoma.  Without telling anyone he is attempting to figure out what Kingpin is up to now that he's under witness protection.  He sees police guards with high-powered rifles around the ranch. While he watches only one car goes in and out.  He takes down the license plate, and sets about setting up surveillance equipment.  He begins to patrol the ranch by turning into his monopole form and lurking about.  He gets some ways into it and as he patrols a lonely shed with strange machinery realizes he cannot move.  When he realizes this he decides to change shape - but cannot.  He is stuck.  He sits for what seems forever and the shed goes completely dark.  In the darkness some force moves around and some wave of energy comes over it.  It does not affect him though.  Finally some sort of bag-like thing scoops him up, ignoring that he exists as a set of molecules that can pass through most loosely coupled substances.  He feels himself moved around and finally settling down in some sort of jail in blackness.  He thinks strenuously about his mental connections - Spectrum, Dr. Strange, Dr. 13, and Lucretia Johnson...

Back at the base, Spectrum wakes up and looks around the room, seeing Jane, who had been watching the soaps while she slept, crumpled on the floor.  She runs to get Sihn, who begins examining her immediately, bringing her to the lab.  He makes a new "brain-print".  He also pages Sammy on the Barbie phone to come back immediately.  Again a trip down the elevator with the unauthorized Steely sets off the alarm again, and Neumann also goes off.  Just as Steely hollers, "That's annoying, how do you get anything done here?" Spectrum quickly telekinetically switches the alarm "off" button, fully aware of the issue at hand.  Now even Jonas the Wonder Dog is back up.  Spectrum, sucking oxygen, still finds it loud as everyone talks and her hangover headache spills over onto everyone else.  Sihn explains to Sammy that he's found that Jane's deterioration has accelerated (in fact she had been putting on a good front during Sammy's Elvis tour) and she's in danger.   Sammy consents to a dangerous operation.

Sihn then pauses for a bit to inject Suzanne with a hangover cure.  Everyone's headache is cured.  Then Sihn by way of explanation to the new Steely says, "About every four weeks it gets really bad around here!"  His headache suddenly returns, even worse.

Sammy notices that there's no animals in cages in Sihn's lab, just a cat walking around casually.  He and Neumann start to ask about the change, but the conversation shifts as Steely Danelle, trying to come to grips with her sudden new life, again asks exactly what the Justice Squad does, as today's events have done little to clarify that.  Sihn and Sammy answer about fighting evil and defending Detroit.

Sihn sets to work saving Jane's life, and he is amazingly successful.  The strain and side effects of the operation will apparently cause her to lose a little power but hardly any, a prognosis better than Sihn had even expected.

Just during the end of the operation, Spectrum feels a mental tap, so to speak, as Lucretia Johnson calls on her.  She has heard Laughton's cries across the mental airwaves and connects him to Spectrum, having too much living to do herself as she says.  Laughton says to Spectrum simply, "Can you guys come to Oklahoma please?"  He then gives Spectrum the basic information but before he can give a precise location both he and she are struck with a mighty mental blast.  They both drop.

Neumann states, "Perhaps we should remove her oxygen mask?"  (she had not removed it, enjoying the free-flowing oxygen even after Sihn fixed her hangover).  He then quickly extends a probe to ensure her heart is beating and checks the contents of the gas mask.  Finding it all as expected, he puts the oxygen mask back on.  Sihn worries perhaps the drug he gave her had some side effect.  He brings her to and she explains what has happened.  After fussing that they're busy and "why should we get Laughton, torture builds character," Sihn contacts Terwilliger to get the location of the ranch, and Terwilliger at first ignores him and then calls him back on a different line.  Terwilliger wants to know what they're going to do and Sihn makes it clear he shouldn't know.  They drop the subject.  Sihn had never planned to go after Kingpin; he knows that once he sees him again he will kill him, no questions asked, no statements given.  The gang scrambles to go to Oklahoma.

Monopole Rodin awakens to find that somehow his molecules have been bonded to some sort of thick substance, so that each monopole can be seen and handled.  He's basically been dipped in some sort of chemical batter, and he thinks to himself, "tempura monopole!"

As the Justice Squad mobilizes Sihn realizes that Kingpin won't know anything about Steely Danelle or her abilities, and with Sammy's insistence he quickly agrees to take her along.  A hasty trailer is added onto the Black Buick for Neumann and Steely to leave the others in some comfort in front.  Jonas the Wonder Dog rides up front with the rest, Neumann holding his whiskey-soaked doggie treats in his cargo panel.  On the way Neumann asks Steely, "Excuse me, are you stainless?"  Puzzled, Danelle asks back, "Excuse me, do you like girls?"  Neumann says, "I do not understand the question."  Steely Danelle responds, "Neither do I."  Attempting to socialize, Neumann then asks, "Would you please oil me?"  Steely makes her fingertips slightly abrasive, like steel wool, and rubs Neumann, removing much of his rust.

They arrive in an hour, at sunset local time, near Kingpin's ranch.  They reconnoiter from a distance.  Neumann listens on all frequency bands and catches an odd high frequency, playing it on his speaker to everyone's chagrin (particularly Jonas') as it's a piercing tone.  The robot then uses his infrared senses and looks at the ranch, noting it's growing colder.  He switches to a lower viscosity oil as Sihn and Sammy realize Kingpin is prepared for them.  They hear strange noises, hollering and shrieking from the ranch.  They're unsure exactly what is going on.  Steely Danelle is not used to the exciting life of the Justice Squad and nervously titters, "Did you hear that!?"

Back inside the base Rodin hears the voice of the Kingpin taunting him.  Fisk laughs and asks the monopole form how he wants to die.  Then Rodin hears a "click" and a wind machine turns on, scrambling the monopole form dizzily around the room, attempting to keep him distracted and abused.  Then Kingpin turns his attention to a loudspeaker and his voice echoes across the prairie now taunting the Justice Squad, "inviting" them to save Laughton.  They briefly consider leaving him, but then wonder who will pay the bar tab at O'Malley's?

Sihn then does something the Justice Squad has never seen.  He pulls out a cane and casts a spell.  They smell something odd and sickening as the fabric of reality tears and out of this rip comes a bunch of "things" that they cannot see well in the darkness.  Neumann comments, "Oklahoma is a strange land."  Despite his mental brain, Neumann is discovered to be completely unfazed by all mystical occurrences [Kirk rolled a 3 on his EGO check].  But Steely Danelle freaks out and begins to dig into the ground in escape.  Neumann helps to settle her as she recovers quickly.  Sammy is a bit nervous inexplicably at the sight of these things and this event, while Spectrum is inured to such things by working with Buffy   Sihn nonchalantly explains, "These guys work really cheap!"  These bizarre flying "byakhees" scatter about responding to Sihn's desire for them to scout out the ranch.

Of 16 that fly out, only 3 return.  They report seeing walking corpses, some sorts of zombies, and that the 13 who did not return went inside the ranch and were unable to return, losing their strength and/or mobility.  Neumann marvels at the notion of walking dead, and Sihn explains a lot of things walking are not living.  Spectrum doesn't want to hear Sihn but explains a bit to Neumann based on her experiences with Buffy and her gang.  They resolve to find out more about these "zombies" and Spectrum reaches out with her mind and grabs one of them, pulling the undead thing for close examination.  They restrain it easily enough though it is quite strong and brutish.  Sihn determines, with his biophysics and recent occult/science (depending on one's view) knowledge, that they are in a sense living, with functioning basic organs, but in a fragile state despite their ability to take damage.  He finds that they are susceptible to physical strikes but can resist energy greatly.  Given this, Sihn and Spectrum explain that these zombies should be spared as Sihn believes he can restore them fully to life.  Steely Danelle is suspicious, and strikes out in front of them walking towards the ranch and the corpses.  Sammy believes zombies aren't living given his exposure to them via TV and movies, though he begrudgingly accepts Sihn's pronouncement.  Neumann is still a bit puzzled.

Steely continues forward and the others walk along, with Sihn and Spectrum hanging back a bit.  As they approach they see in the back of the crowd of zombies a sinister-looking character with a skull for a face.  He's simply called Dead Guy and seems to have some sort of sway over the half-live beings.  Steely is a bit surprised as she approaches and suddenly the heroes sweep forward into a confrontation - she was simply wanting to get closer.

Sammy strikes out but in the night sky can't quite see where he's striking, some 100 yards away, and misses Death Guy, a pool of acid landing harmlessly nearby.  Dead Guy rushes into the midst of a number of the zombies.  Spectrum strikes him mentally to some, but not much, effect.  The Troll releases a flood of blood from himself in a strange magical strike, but misses the stealthy Dead Guy and strikes one of the corpses.  Dead Guy, unseen, grows stronger as the corpse suffers a tad.  Steely Danelle moves forward and misses Dead Guy as well.  Neumann moves into the fray striking at Dead Guy as well, and is dealt a massive blow by one of the corpses, found to be of unusual strength.  Dead Guy releases a mystic energy that the Troll feels but isn't cowed by.  The Troll and Sammy leap in against Dead Guy and slam him back and into the ground, while Steely Danelle puts up a massive wall of steel around most of the corpses, rendering them incapable of harming anyone.  She concentrates on keeping that up as Neumann, the Troll, and Sammy take Dead Guy out with massive blows.  Spectrum is struck by a sudden mental blast, one which continues to concentrate on her, keeping her out of the action [GM note - Spectrum went home, but gave me a good idea how to spend some of those extra Kingpin base points].  As Dead Guy is kept down for the count, Steely Danelle keeps her force wall up as the heroes toss the other corpses into the ranch for their own safety, the strange effects of the ranch eventually stopping them from moving.  The Troll tends to Spectrum but finds that the mental blasts come at such a rate he cannot revive her for any significant period of time.

To find out more about what is going on, Sihn pulls Dead Guy's head off to communicate with it (after determining that he can live that way).  Dead Guy hisses sarcastic greetings and taunts and responds to questioning by attacking the Troll with a dangerously enhanced killing blast that he controls simply with his mind.  After two strikes, they put Dead Guy back down, although the task is not so easy; after the Troll forces the head deep into the ground, it blasts the dirt above out even though it cannot move.  Sammy fills the hole with acid as the body ever-so-slowly disintegrates on the ground and reforms under the head.  Soon Dead Guy is out.  The Troll tries to get samples but finds they degenerate too quickly.

They turn their attention to testing the ranch out.  Neumann braves it first, going in and exploring the seeming corn silo, which is apparently as it seems as it contains corn.  The robot feels unaffected but suddenly ceases operating.  Sihn runs in and brings him back, and he recovers quickly.  At that point Sihn works with Sammy, Sammy altering his form to have different strengths, to find out how much of a drain on mobility and power the field is really emanating.  They find out through Sammy, as suspected from Rodin's experience, that the field also halts transformation powers.

Inside Rodin feels some strange pain, and suddenly the team is interrupted by a piece of Rodin's monopole form being tossed out into the field.  Kingpin laughs that he will continue to do so as long as the heroes stand back.  Five minutes later another piece of Rodin is tossed out.  Of course at this rate it would take several thousand years to dissemble the monopole with its many molecular pieces.

Sihn resolves to find a solution that will dampen the field's powers. He consults with Gere-luce and flies back with Rogers to Detroit to concoct a remote stabilizing device that he will then power through his magic-science abilities.  The effort takes some two and a half hours and the night turns into the wee hours of the morning.  Determining that the Troll is gone for some time, two villainous mutants pop out of the corn silo and rush Neumann, Sammy, and Steely Danelle.  One, Grossout, is a disgusting teenage mutant whose powers center on free-flowing snot from his nose and the popping of the pimples on his face.  He strikes out at Sammy but misses, and Sammy strikes him at the same time, but although he hits, he finds out that a spittle that runs over Grossout's surface washes out Sammy's acid.  The other villain, Opossum, has nasty claws that strike out as Neumann attacks him.  Sammy strikes at Grossout with a mighty blow.  Neumann moves into position and releases a steam that hurts both Grossout and Opossum, with Grossout knocked down by a strike by Sammy then knocked slightly out by Steely and her hammering fists.  Opossum then knocks out Sammy with his damaging claws, then Neumann and Opossum square off.  Neumann chips away at the Opossum with his steam, but then Opossum's claws slash into Neumann's wiring and knock him out.  Steely Danelle holds off Opossum, unable to strike at the evasive animal-mutant, but able to hold up against Opossum's slashing strikes.  As the Troll arrives luckily in the nick of time, he delivers the coup de grace to the struggling Opossum.  Steely Danelle moves quickly on Grossout who is starting to get up; she strikes a resounding blow [rolled a 3], shattering his left shoulder and caving part of his chest in.  The resilient mutant is not mortally wounded but will not be using his left arm or getting up any steam for a while.

The Justice Squad, with Rodin still captured and Spectrum catatonic, consider their next steps...at least they have a device that, if nearby it, should cancel out the strange effect bathing the ranch...
