Before the war Peter Newkirk, an Englishman, was a stage magician with a shday past. He also used to travel with a circus groups called "The Amazing Bloomingtons" and had an act titled "George and Freddy" (the latter played by a chimp). He had a sister named Mavis who lived in Stepney. During the war he was what he refers to as an "engineer," which means he served as a waist turret gunner. He was captured early in the war, in 1940. He joined Hogan's Heroes probably from the beginning, most often performing the more dodgy of tasks. Of course, like all of his group he was a capable fighter and saboteur. What Newkirk did after the war is up to the player; he may have gone on as a magician. While the picture shows Newkirk as a younger man, in real life the actor, Richard Dawson, developed gray-speckled and finally fully gray hair, though he looked quite identifiably the same in general.

Newkirk likes to act smart-alecky and sarcastic, but he is actually very soft-hearted and emotional. He also tends to be the playful one of the group.(http://classictv.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=classictv&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fbarracks.4t.com%2F).

"Well, I prefer to think of it, sir, as 'borrowed'. "That's the story of my life. I could never hang on to money."

He's great at various sneaky and underhanded abilities; in a D&D game, Newkirk would be the thief, pure and simple.
